What IS Happy Pretty Messy? It's cultivating self-confidence, self-love, and laughing at yourself, while adding a little extra something to your life.
Want to know a secret? Happy Pretty Messy was NOT the original title of this book. It was originally called Modern Verve and Vintage Charm (yawn). While it has modern verve and vintage charm IN it, it IS Happy Pretty Messy. The book itself, the style, the feeling you get when reading it...it just embodies happy, pretty, messy. There's some finding happiness, overcoming tragedy, dealing with grief, getting over anxiety stuff, and then there's how to pick a good wooden spoon, why I love coffee, and what vintage items I collect. Just like my life. It's probably how your life goes too, if we're honest: there's tough, heavy, heart-achy stuff, and then there's still the beautiful little simple things that give us joy. It's being comfortable with self-confidence, self-love, and laughing at yourself! It's my life motto, and I want it to be yours too.
I think we can all feel it as soon as we hear it...oh yeah, I know what that means, happy pretty messy. That's my life, too! I am a poet, so words are feelings to me, and those three together just create the feeling of life for me. There's a feeling of breathlessness in it, a spirit of joie de vivre, too, a liveliness that shows in a sure smile, a quick step to help, and a deep enjoyment of the small things in life (aka. dorkiness, such as LOVING scratch-and-sniff postage stamps of popsicles, or getting SUCH a kick out of when my fingernail polish matches something perfectly). It's about coffee making me think faster than I can say things and words tumbling out wrong half the time, and then having a deep conversation with an old friend over candlelight and looking soul-to-soul at life. It's living close to cliches but never being one, remembering the smell of my grandparent's farm but not remembering what I had for breakfast, and, it is, as my dear mentor Tasha Tudor once said, "Reading Shakespeare while stirring the jam," or, as my favorite band (no judgement please) Train, sings, "She wears high heels when she exercises."
Happy pretty messy is for high-schoolers and college girls figuring out the world and finding themselves, it's for twenty-somethings who are balancing romance and rent and careers and self-care, and it's for young moms for whom happy pretty messy mostly means messy in the form of spit-up and not having a moment to themselves....ever. Happy pretty messy is inspiration for women balancing taking care of elderly parents and their own children, falling asleep on the couch before getting up to do it all over again, and it's for moms finding what it means to be something other than "mom" after all the kids are out of the house, or who find themselves alone in grief after death or divorce and just want something, anything, that is happy and pretty.
The book Happy Pretty Messy is half heart-work and half physical things, because that's what happy pretty messy is...it's inside and outside, and how they reflect each other. A messy environment is usually indicative of a messy mind and heart. A broken heart usually shows up in sweatpants and piles of dirty dishes. Taking care of your mind, heart, soul, spirit, body AND your physical environment, creates a sustainable life. A happy one. A pretty one. A happy pretty messy one. Let's do this. Together.
